Our History

On July 2, 1970, three banks — Exchange Security Bank of Birmingham, First National Bank of Huntsville and First National Bank of Montgomery — filed an application with the Federal Reserve Bank to become a bank holding company. Combined, they had assets of $446 million. The Federal Reserve approved the creation of First Alabama Bankshares in a 5-to-2 vote in 1971.

Regions, which had $4.4 billion in assets in 1987, grew to $32.8 billion in assets and 667 locations by the end of 1998. An acquisition of Memphis-based Union Planters in 2004 was followed by a merger with cross-town rival AmSouth in 2006.

Today, Regions is one of the nation's largest full-service providers of consumer, commercial, mortgage and wealth management banking products and services. Regions' mission is to achieve superior economic value for shareholders over time by making life better for customers, associates and communities and creating shared value as we help them meet their financial goals and aspirations.
